Comments Off on Apple shares slip downwards in spite of strong iPhone 5 sales weekend

Only Apple.

Only Apple can sell 5 million units of a new product in just 3 days and have its share price go down by 10 points. In the wake of Apple’s iPhone 5 weekend sales figures, shares of Apple are down nearly 10 points to $690.56. Never mind the fact that Apple’s iPhone 5 sales figures are already 25% higher than they were for the iPhone 4S. Remember that launch weekend sales figures for the 4S checked in at 4 million units.

In the premarket, shares of Apple fell 2.13% as market analysts had expected Apple to sell more than 8 million of the next-generation iPhone during the first debut weekend.

Apple said more than 100 million iOS devices have been updated with iOS 6, the world’s most advanced mobile operating system. In comparison, more than 25 million customers have updated their devices with iOS 5 in the first five days of its release in October 2011.

It’s crazy what type of impact statements from a lone analyst can have on the performance of a stock, more so than the actual performance of a company it would appear.

Gene Munster says lines for the iPhone 5 are 83% longer than they were for the iPhone 4S

In the first 24 hours that pre-orders were open, Apple processed an astounding 2 million iPhone 5 orders. In doing so, the iPhone 5 positioned itself to be the most successful iPhone launch yet, and some analysts are anticipating launch weekend sales to fall in the 8 million to 10 million range. Not too shabby for a device that some critics were quick to label a ho-hum upgrade.

Comments Off on Jimmy Kimmel’s iPhone 5/iPhone 4S prank [Video]

Missed this on the first go-around, but worth sharing in case you might have missed it as well. It’s Jimmy Kimmel handing people iPhone 4S’ and telling them it’s an iPhone 5. And oh boy, does the power of suggestion ever rear its interesting head as people proudly proclaim that the iPhone 4S is lighter, thinner, and faster than the, well, than the iPhone 4S.

Nicely done. And you gotta love the absolute authority with which people are proclaiming the “iPhone 5” to be vastly superior to the iPhone 4S.

Comments Off on Apple sells over 5 million iPhone 5s on launch weekend

Apple issued a press release boasting that it sold over 5 million iPhone 5 devices over the weekend. Further, Apple’s press release also mentioned that over 100 million iOS devices were updated with iOS 6, the latest iteration of Apple’s mobile operating system.

“Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible,” Tim Cook said in the press release. “While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone.”

Apple asks Court for $707 million more in damages from Samsung

Comments Off on Apple asks Court for $707 million more in damages from Samsung

Not simply content with their $1.05 billion judgement against Samsung this past Summer, Apple continues to press on the legal gas as it recently filed a motion with the Court seeking an additional $707 million in damages from Samsung. Samsung, meanwhile, responded in kind by asking for an entirely new trial altogether.

In a motion filed late Friday U.S. time, Apple sought a further $400 million damage award for design infringement by Samsung; $135 million for willful infringement of its utility patents; $121 million in supplemental damages based on Samsung’s product sales not covered in the jury’s deliberation; and $50 million of prejudgment interest on damages through December 31. The requests together come to $707 million.

In addition, Apple is also seeking a permanent injunction that would cover any Samsung product containing a feature “not more than colorably different from any of the infringing feature or features in any of the Infringing Products.”

You might remember that back in August Apple filed a motion with the US District Court in Northern California seeking an injunction against 8 Samsung smartphones.

  • Galaxy S 4G
  • Galaxy S2 (AT&T)
  • Galaxy S2 (Skyrocket)
  • Galaxy S2 (T-Mobile)
  • Galaxy S2 Epic 4G
  • Galaxy S Showcase
  • Droid Charge
  • Galaxy Prevail

As for Samsung, they want a new trial because they feel the time contraints implemented by Judge Lucy Koh were too limited for a trial of this complexity and magnitude, and consequently “prevented Samsung from presenting a full and fair case in response to Apple’s many claims.”

And so the battle rages on…

Now THIS is how you make an iPhone 5 parody. Eat your heart out, Conan. This is legit.

And the accent and delivery of Joe Bloggs is just so spot on and Ivy-esque.

“iPhone 5 is more comfortable to use and reduces scrolling fatigue while reading long documents.”

iPhone 5 photos vs iPhone 4S photos

Comments Off on iPhone 5 photos vs iPhone 4S photos

When Phil Schiller began showing off the iPhone 5, he conceded that making a phone thinner is typically not what you want to do when you’re trying to improve a device’s camera. But Apple’s vaunted engineering team put in a lot of work to create a camera that’s markedly better than the iPhone 4S.

Looking to gauge just how much better the iPhone 5 camera is, Gizmodo put it through the ringer and compared it to the 3S, the Galaxy S3 from Samsung, the HTC One X, and Nokia’s 41MP 808 PureView (ha!).

Overall, the iPhone 5 preformed exceptionally well, and thankfully one major area of improvement is in the photos it takes in low light settings.

Here is a comparison of low light photos taken with the iPhone 5 vs the iPhone 4.

Gizmodo explains the iPhone 5 low light advantage:

The iPhone 4S tops out at a maximum sensitivity of ISO 800, which just isn’t enough to get a properly exposed photo in a dark situation without flash. Apple’s greatly improved the image processing on the iPhone 5 such that the camera can now shoot up to a sensitivity of ISO 3200 while still ending up with less noise. This is a sea change. If you like taking photos in dark bars and you’re addicted to Apple’s iOS ecosystem, this upgrade is essential.

And here you can see the noticeable improvement in sharpness with the iPhone 5 over the iPhone 4S.

Head on over to Giz for the full breakdown of iPhone 5 comparison shots vs other smarpthones. The iPhone 5 doesn’t win every shootout, but it’s more than a capable competitor and is an obvious improvement over iPhone 4S photos.

Apple releases 4 new iPhone 5 ads

Comments Off on Apple releases 4 new iPhone 5 ads

While watching some crappy TV yesterday (Mob Doctor, anyone?) I happened to see two new iPhone 5 ads. And lo and behold, it turns out that Apple released 2 additional iPhone 5 ads to make a grand total of 4 new commercials.

The first one, dubbed “Thumb”, touts the iPhone 5’s bigger screen while highlighting how the device isn’t overly wide as to make it unusable. Yes, this is likely a thinly veiled potshot against those gargantuan Android devices which seemingly get larger and larger with each iteration.

Next up we have “Cheese” which highlights the new Panorama photo feature on iOS 6.

And following that is an iPhone 5 commercial Apple calls “Physics” which marvels at the fact that the iPhone 5 has a bigger screen yet is overall much thinner than its predecessors. “I guess the laws of Physics are more like general guidelines”, the narrator (who just so happens to be Jeff Daniels) says.

And the last one, which just so happens to be the most boring we think, is called “Ears”. Yep, a commercial for Apple’s new headphones. I guess ear models are finally getting to put some work in!

iPhone 5 does well in drop test against Samsung Galaxy S3

Comments Off on iPhone 5 does well in drop test against Samsung Galaxy S3

You can’t have a new iPhone release without some fools dropping it down on the ground to see how durable it is. To that end, check out this drop test comparison between the recently released iPhone 5 and the popular Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone.

The iPhone does, in the words of Larry David, pretty pretty good.

Android Authority notes:

Well, as much as we hate to admit it, the iPhone 5 did amazingly well in our drop test, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 came out in pretty bad shape. It’s the cold hard truth that we can’t hide and we can’t ignore.
….
The hard aluminum shell of the iPhone 5 withstood the impact pretty well, and the glass protecting the display remained intact. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S3 predictably lost its back cover and suffered damage to the casing and the front glass. Sad, sad, sad.

The Verge’s monster iPhone 5 review

Comments Off on The Verge’s monster iPhone 5 review

Josh Topolosky doesn’t dissapoint with this monster iPhone 5 review. The short of it? They like it, they really really like it.

The iPhone 5 is unquestionably the best iPhone ever made, and for the mass market, it’s the best smartphone, period. Between the new design, blazing fast LTE, and excellent battery life, there’s little to not like here. It’s a competent, confident, slick package, certainly made better by most (but not all) of the updates and changes in iOS 6. Despite the Maps issues and some questions about whether Passbook will be a viable product, there’s no doubt that Apple has crafted a beast of a phone — a fine machine that is a worthy new entry in the most innovative line of products the company has ever made.

And if you ain’t the readin’ type, here’s a video review of the iPhone 5 from The Verge to gaze upon.

Comments Off on iFixit tears down the iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 is now on sale across the world and it didn’t take iFixit anytime at all to get their hands on one and get to work. Check out their teardown process here.

Because the iPhone 5 is opened front-to-back, replacing a cracked screen is going to be easier than ever. Thank you, Apple!

Compare this to the iPhone 4S, where it took 38 steps to isolate the display assembly, and this iPhone may be the most repairable iPhone we’ve seen in a while.

Awww yeah.

Apple talks Maps complaints as Mapping team remains “under lockdown” to address problems

Comments Off on Apple talks Maps complaints as Mapping team remains “under lockdown” to address problems

Apple’s new Maps app has already received a lot of criticism and iOS 6 is barely 24 hours old. To that end, Apple released a public statement via All Things D where it essentially calls Maps a work in progress.

Customers around the world are upgrading to iOS 6 with over 200 new features including Apple Maps, our first map service,” said spokeswoman Trudy Miller. “We are excited to offer this service with innovative new features like Flyover, turn by turn navigation, and Siri integration. We launched this new map service knowing it is a major initiative and that we are just getting started with it. Maps is a cloud-based solution and the more people use it, the better it will get. We appreciate all of the customer feedback and are working hard to make the customer experience even better.

Today the web has been inundated with examples of Apple’s Maps app just plum messing things up. Hell, a Tumblr page was even created to document all of Apple’s Maps missteps. You can check that out here.

Of course, it’s not as if Maps is a complete flop. And sure, it’s easy to cherry pick the times when it fails, but given that Google’s Maps is already fully baked and has been used by millions for years now, Apple better make some improvements rather quickly. In the meantime, iPhone users can still access Google Maps via the browser and Google is reportedly now working on a standalone version of its Maps app as well.

Lastly, sources told All Things D writer Jon Paczkowski that Apple’s team of Map engineers is “under lockdown right now working to fix it.”

We’ll see how long it takes for Apple to issue an update or if many of the problems will, as Apple implies, correct themselves as people continue to add in information.

The short of it is – Maps are hard, son.
