Edible Apple

We go months with nary a drop of news about Apple’s rumored tablet, and in the course of a day we’re now struggling to keep up!  In the last 24 hours, we’ve seen reports stating that Apple will announce a tablet device in January, that the tablet will be 7-inches, and that Apple is still trying to secure content from a number of TV networks for an iTunes subscription service (and potential tablet integration).  And now comes a concrete rumor from the New York Times that should definitely raise a few eyebrows.

But the icing on the cake comes from a current senior employee inside Apple. When one of my colleagues here asked if the rumors of the Apple tablet were true, and when we could expect such a device, the response from his source was, “I can’t really say anything, but, let’s just say Steve is extremely happy with the new tablet.”

Yet another recently departed Apple employee tipped me: “You will be very surprised how you interact with the new tablet.”

Interestingly, though not surprisingly, the NYT points out that Apple has been toying and experimenting with a tablet device, in one form or another, for years now, and that many of the technologies in abandoned tablets of years past have subsequently now found their way into other devices such as the iPhone.

But back to Jobs and the tablet.  It’s pretty telling that Jobs is quoted as being “extremely happy” with the new tablet because the last time we heard a story about Jobs being giddy with excitement over an upcoming product was when Apple was on the verge of introducing the iPhone.

And as for the remark that we’ll be “very surprised” as to how we use the tablet, well, let’s just say that that’s quite a cliffhanger.
