While Apple remains focused on advertising the practical benefits of owning an iPhone, some of its competitors are still seemingly obsessed with using spec sheets as advertising bait.

During a speech last week at the Executives’ Club of Chicago, Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha discussed his company’s plans to release a 2GHZ smartphone before 2011. While Jha was unwilling to disclose many details, an anonymous Motorola employee picked up the slack, stating that Motorola is working on a new phone that will “incorporate everything that is technologically possible in a smartphone today.” As you might expect, the device will run Android, and will reportedly come with a gyroscope as well as with a Nvidia Tegra-based graphics processor with full Flash 10.1 hardware acceleration. Some other possible goodies include an out of this world camera, and HD video recording and output.

That’s all well and good, and touting geek-tastic specs is certainly a great way to sell to, well, geeks, but the vast majority of the population couldn’t care less. It’s not about feature whoring, it’s about the user experience. And while some companies like to throw everything under the sun into one device, others, like Apple, focus on a few features with a laser like intensity.

In any event, it’s unclear if this mystery phone Jha is alluding to is an entirely new model or simply an upgrade to an existing Motorola phone. Either way, and if Jha’s promise bears fruit, we should expect to see this 2GHZ beast hit stores just in time for the 2010 holiday shopping season.

Meanwhile, Jha also expressed that sales of the Motorola Droid have been extremely strong and that the company is actually experiencing some supply issues. “(Droid) sales are going extremely well,” Jha boasted, “if I could build more I’d sell more.”
