The iTunes App Store continues to grow at an astounding rate, and if downloads keep up at their current pace, we should see the billionth download take place sometime in the next two months. Games for the iPhone account for nearly 25% of all downloaded apps, and large publishing houses are increasingly devoting a significant amount of resources towards iPhone development.
EA is one of the more prominent developers of iPhone games, and at the 2009 Game Developers Conference today in San Francisco, the publishing giant announced that it was working on 17 new upcoming iPhone and iPod Touch titles that are scheduled for release in 2009. Not surprisingly, more than a quarter of those games are Sports titles, and include Tiger Woods, FIFA, Madden, NBA Live, and the popular snowboarding game SSX.
While some games lend themselves perfectly to the iPhone’s touchscreen, EA is keenly aware of the challenge involved in porting button-intensive games like Madden and NBA Live over to the iPhone. EA VP Travis Boatman stated, “We’re taking those challenges head on”, and it’ll be interesting to see what they have in store.
Outside of the sports genre, EA also plans on releasing the following titles in 2009:
- SIMS 3
- Spore Creatures
- Command & Conquer
- Connect Four
- Clue
- RISK
- Mystery Mania
- Wolfenstein RPG
- American Idol
- Battleship
- Need for Speed
- Monopoly
