Apple announced yesterday that it sold 3.47 million Macs during the quarter gone by, representing a “new quarterly record and a 33 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter.” This achievement is all the more remarkable given that it took place during a non-holiday quarter.
Breaking down the 3.47 million figure, Apple sold 1 million desktops during the quarter and 2.47 million notebooks. Revenue from the sale of Mac desktops came in at $1.3 billion while revenue from Apple’s line of notebooks checked in at $3.1 billion. All told, revenue derived from Mac sales ($4.4 billion) lags slightly behind iPhone revenue ($5.3 billion), but is still a good deal higher than the $2.2 and $1.5 billion in revenue derived from the iPad and iPod respectively.
Putting things into a historical perspective, and highlighting just how fast revenue from Mac sales continues to rise, Apple generated just $1.6 billion in revenue from Mac sales during the third fiscal quarter of 2005.
As for total Mac sales, the following chart, courtesy of The Register, speaks for itself.
