The iPhone 4S has received network regulatory approval from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and may go on sale there as early as Christmas, according to a report from Mic Gadget.
MIIT is a state agency in China that regulates the Internet and wireless communications. The new iPhone 4S, like all mobile phones, still must obtain a network access license from regulators if its maker wants to sell it in China. Here’s the good news, the 4S had cleared the required MIIT regulatory hurdles and the device obtained a three-year valid Radio Transmission Equipment Type Approval Certificate (RTETAC), which is one of the requirements for getting MIIT’s network access license. The model submitted for testing was compatible with GSM, WCDMA, HSDPA / HSUPA, Bluetooth, and WAPI (WLAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure).
If last year’s iPhone 4 sales on China Unicom are any indication, sales of the iPhone 4S are going to be impressive. Last year, China Unicom was overwhelmed with demand for the iPhone 4, processing 200,000 pre-orders and running out of supply in just a few days. In fact, demand for the iPhone 4 was so great that China Unicom temporarily stopped accepting all online pre-orders, forcing interested customers to physically show up in tore.
