Apple this summer began a multi-million dollar renovation effort at its flagship “Cube” store on Fifth Avenue in New York – and now we’re getting word as to what changes Apple plans on making.
Initially, word was that Apple was going to remove the glass and its accompanying connection hardware and reinstall the cube. Now Apple has tipped its hand, so to speak, via an informative sign posted on the plaza surrounding the store indicating that Apple’s is intent on creating a more seamless look for the iconic retail location by using larger pieces of glass.
“We’re simplifying the Fifth Avenue cube,” the sign reads. “By using larger, seamless pieces of glass, we’re using just 15 panes instead of 90.”
The diagram above reveals that Apple will be using just three panes of glass, albeit extremely large ones, on each side of the store. The result will be a more streamlined and modern look for a store that is one of the most photographed “landmarks” in all of New York.
The old store looked like this:
Recently, Steve Jobs stood before the Palo Alto city counsel and pitched a new Apple campus featuring a spaceship style structure composed out of one humongous piece of curved glass.
Jobs explained at the time, “We’ve used our experience in building retail buildings all over the world. We know how to make the biggest pieces of glass for architectural use. And, we want to make the glass specifically for this building here. We can make it curve all the way around the building… It’s pretty cool.”
Last we heard, renovations to the fifth avenue Apple store may be completed as early as November.
