Since going on sale yesterday, sales of OS X Lion have been so impressive that Apple decided to issue a press release touting that its latest OS update has been downloaded by over one million users, making it the most successful OS X launch in company history.
Apple today announced that in just one day, over one million users bought and downloaded Mac OS X Lion, the eighth major release of the world’s most advanced operating system. Available through the Mac App Store for $29.99 (US), users are buying Lion faster than any other OS release in Apple’s history.
“Lion is off to a great start, user reviews and industry reaction have been fantastic,” Phil Schiller explained in the press release. “Lion is a huge step forward, it’s not only packed with innovative features but it’s incredibly easy for users to update their Macs to the best OS we’ve ever made.”
Apple pointing to Lion as the most successful OS launch in company history is quite remarkable given that Snow Leopard, upon release, previously held that title. Putting things into perspective, Snow Leopard sales were two times as high as OS X Leopard and four times as high as OS X Tiger. The fact that Lion sales are now eclipsing Snow Leopard sales serves to illustrate the growing popularity of the Mac.
Of course, it undoubtedly helps that OS X Lion is available for only $29. Further, the ability to download OS X Lion makes the upgrade process much more seamless and, more importantly, more accessible to the masses.
