Edible Apple

Back in February, word spread that Apple was exploring putting up a new Apple Store inside the historic Grand Central Terminal, otherwise known as Grand Central Station in NYC. But getting an Apple retail store inside a city landmark is no small feat, and requires an inordinate number of applications and a long drawn-out approval process.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Real Estate and Leasing division oversees new tenants inside Grand Central Terminal, and at the time, MTA spokesman Aaaron Donovan explained, “We select tenants through a public process that features a formal request for proposals. We don’t comment on prospective tenants outside of the process.“

So yes, everything was quite preliminary, but now that Apple stores are well-established, Apple has upped the ante in its efforts to place new stores in more historic and arguably “sophisticated” areas than ever before. To wit, Apple’s 294th store in Paris opened up in a historic bank that was converted into an Apple retail store that preserved the original buildings original architectural flair, and of course here in the US, there’s an Apple retail store in historic Georgetown.

But it was not to be.

The New York Observer is reporting that Apple recently decided to withdraw from consideration its plan to bring a 16,000 square foot store to the balconies of Grand Central Terminal.
