This Saturday, Apple’s iTunes App Store reached yet another milestone when it reached the 10 billion download mark. In a press release commemorating the occasion, Apple announced that Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, UK was the lucky winner of a $10,000 iTunes gift card after downloading the 10 billionth app – Paper Glider.
“With more than 10 billion apps downloaded in just two and a half years—a staggering seven billion apps in the last year alone—the App Store has surpassed our wildest dreams,” Apple marketing VP Phil Schiller stated. “The App Store has revolutionized how software is created, distributed, discovered and sold. While others try to copy the App Store, it continues to offer developers and customers the most innovative experience on the planet.”
As it stands now, the iTunes App Store now has over 350,000 iOS apps and 60,000 native iPad apps available for download. Since going live in July of 2008, it’s taken the app store just barely over two and a half years to hit the 10 billion download mark. And while comparing the app store to the iTunes Music Store is decidedly unfair given that a good chunk of the 10 billion app store downloads were free, it’s worth pointing out that it took the iTunes Music Store nearly 7 years to reach the 10 billion mark.
