It’s about that time of year when the iPhone 5 rumors are taking a mild vacation to make room for what promises to be a flood of iPad 3 rumors in the coming months.

Kicking things off proper is Macotakara, a Japanese-language blog which writes that Apple’s next-gen iPad will more or less feature the same dimensions as the iPad 2 aside from a slightly thicker form factor. The size of the screen, the width and height of the device, however, will purportedly stay the same. So don’t you worry, that iPad 2 smartcover should still work seamlessly on the iPad 3.

According to Asian supplier which provides part for next iPad, next iPad has same size of screen, but case may be thicker by unknown reason. Current iPad cases, which covers backside, will not be compatible with thicker next iPad.

It’s largely believed that the iPad 3 will feature a Retina Display, with some rumors pointing to 4G functionality as well. While 4G is notorious for draining battery life on mobile devices, the already stellar battery performance of the iPad might make that issue a moot point.

Sources expect the iPad to hit stores sometime in April, with a slight chance it might drop in March. And though Apple clearly isn’t having a problem fending off iPad competitors already, one analyst believes the iPad 3 launch might be accompanied by a significant drop in the iPad 2 as a means for Apple to further cement its already rock solid lead over competing tablets.
