Samsung recently released a brilliantly funny commercial taking a swipe at Apple fanboys, or at the very least, the type of Apple fan who has no problem waiting in line for hours ahead of a new product launch.
The commercial depicts Hipster looking folks sporting white headbuds waiting outside of what look to be Apple retail stores. Everyone is “amped” to be waiting in line with one guy comically asking why two people would drop out of line when there’s only 9 hours left until the store opens.
And then, in a clear shot at the iPhone 4S, one line-goer mentions how blogs are saying the battery life is no good followed by a quick shot of someone saying, “If it looks the same, how will people know I upgraded?”
Now that’s funny and is the same type of humor Apple itself used to great effect on its famed “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” ads a few years ago.
The folks in line then become enamored with users – standing outside the line of course – toting around Android devices from Samsung. They’re intrigued by all the features Android devices have going for it – a bigger screen and 4G speeds.
And then, in the tour de force of the ad, an Apple fan with oversized headphones dismissively states, “I could never get a Samsung, I’m creative.” To which his friend replies, “Dude, you’re a barista.”
All in all, a solid commercial that takes pointed jabs at what Samsung feels is the typical iPhone owner – a fad following dolt whose purchasing decisions are based on trying to be cool.
