Reuters reports that Apple is working on an 8GB iPhone 4 it plans to release alongside an iPhone 5 with an edge to edge screen. But contrary to previous reports, the iPhone 5 will reportedly sport the same form factor as the iPhone 4. If you recall, a number of iPhone 5 case schematics and moldings pointed to a larger device that was both thinner, longer, and wider than the current iteration.
As for the 8GB iPhone 4, this aligns with a number of previous reports indicating that Apple was working on a low-end iPhone to better appeal to the low-end range of the market.
Some analysts said the cheaper 8GB iPhone 4 could help Apple boost sales in emerging markets.
“Apple may want to push into the emerging market segment where customers want to switch to low- to mid-end smartphones from high-end feature phones, which usually cost $150-200,” said Yuanta Securities analyst Bonnie Chang.
“But I think for an 8GB iPhone 4 the price is hard to go below $200, so Apple will still need a completely new phone with low specifications for the emerging markets.”
Reuters also notes that Apple is aiming for a late September launch, though a number of earlier rumors had pegged October 7th as the launch date.
