This weekend we reported on a note from a research firm claiming that Apple has plans to release an LED-based iPad 3 in time for the 2011 holiday shopping season. While we reasoned that such an aggressive product upgrade rollout does make a bit of sense, DigiTimes is reporting that Apple just recently began certifying components like LED backlights for the iPad 3
According to component makers, the timing for the launch of iPad 3 should be in 2012. Taiwan-based firms think iPad 2 will become the mainstream and Apple will lower its price to compete with other tablet PCs.
So it would appear that another iPad model before the Christmas shopping season is probably not on the agenda. Also of note is news that Apple will not, contrary to previously published rumors, implement Samsung’s AMOLED panels on its next-gen iPad. If you recall, Tim Cook reportedly traveled to South Korea a few weeks back to visit with Samsung officials about possibly using AMOLED displays.
