Apple to merge Safari and iTunes – Wild Rumor

News, Rumors

This one seems way out there, but Three Men and a Podcast anticipate that Apple will merge iTunes into Safari in order to increase browser marketshare and that Apple will announce this initiative at its traditional iPod/Music event held in the early Fall.

It is believed that Safari will be the only browser able to access iTunes, as iTunes is built into the browser itself. “Moving iTunes organizational side-bar into Safari isn’t a monumental task” claimed a source, adding “Safari would skyrocket in use as a result of integrating the software titles together.”

Seems highly dubious.

Well, it would solve the Ping problem. Currently, Ping is only available through iTunes, which is freely available and, in fact, exists on many, many computers. Now, imagine iTunes becoming integrated with Safari, suddenly, all those millions of PCs running iTunes are also running Safari. Apple could win the browser war with a single update. Hmmm. Far fetched? Maybe, but not impossible.
