Back in mid-November we reported that The Gorillaz upcoming album was recorded exclusively with an iPad. Explaining the bands decision to go all high-tech for their latest release, Gorillaz member and Blur lead singer Damon Albarn explained,
“I’ve made it on an iPad. I hope I’ll be making the first record on an iPad – which is ironic, being the sort of technophobe and Luddite that I am. I fell in love with my iPad as soon as I got it, so I’ve made a completely different kind of record.”
Initially, the band wanted to release the album sometime before 2011, and true to form, the band will release the album on Christmas Day for free. Yep, that’s right. Fans will be able to check out the iPad inspired musical stylings of The Gorillaz on the house come December 25th. Moreover, the band will release a music video for the albums first single on Christmas Eve to set the stage for the gift that is the free album on Christmas day.
Now as for why the band chose to release the album specifically on Christmas Day, Albarn explains, “If I left it until the New Year to release it, then the cynics out there would say, ‘Oh well, it’s been tampered with.’ But if I put it out now, they’d know that I haven’t done anything because I’ve been on tour ever since.”
Ah-ha! So the band simply wants to ensure that no one doubts the authenticity of the first ever iPad recorded album. Now creating music on the iPhone and iPad is nothing new, but creating an entire album is a decidedly different beast – especially coming from a band as well-respected and mainstream as The Gorillaz.
