AT&T exploring ways to accommodate iPad owners who want the expiring $29 unlimited data plan

AT&T shook things up earlier this week with announced changes to its wireless data plan for iPad owners. Gone are the days of unlimited data for $29.95 and in its place is a 2GB capped plan for $25. The $15 plan for 200 MB of data is still available.

The announced changes go into effect on June 7, and with AT&T announcing that current iPad 3G owners will be grandfathered in under the old unlimited data plans, there’s been a rush to grab up iPad 3G models as quick as possible. Not surprisingly, however, the shortage of iPad 3Gs, which was a problem even before AT&T’s announcement, is now more pronounced.

AT&T is looking for ways to alleviate the shortage and take care of customers looking to get in on the unlimited plan while they still can. One proposed solution, according to a recent report in the New York Times, would be to allow customers who order the iPad before June 7 to sign up for the unlimited plan even without the device in hand.

“Until the company’s solution is announced, though, consumers have until 11:59 p.m. on June 6, just three days from now, to buy an iPad with 3G capability and sign up for the unlimited plan.”
