The Virtual Zippo Lighter app, a joint project between Zippo Manufacturing and Moderati, recently surpassed over 5 million downloads. In case you’re unfamiliar with a Zippo, it’s an iconic lighter that you’d probably recognize instantly if you saw it. And whadya know, there it is chillin’ to the right of this text!
Since its release in October of last year, the free app peaked at 18 on the most popular download chart on iTunes, but steady interest has kept the downloads coming in at a pretty astounding rate.
Speaking on the 5 million download milestone, Zippo Manufacturing noted, “The Zippo Lighter strikes a chord with the digital generation.. and the application has resonated with audiences across the world.” The emphasis is all theirs, and an obvious play on the popular use of lighters at concerts, be they virtual or real.
5 million eyeballs is no joke, and while the developers might not be making any money with their free app, the branding opportunity for a corporation on the iPhone is unparalleled in the mobile space.
