Apple’s share of the smartphone market more than doubled in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the same quarter a year ago, according to recent data released by Gartner. In the first quarter of 2008, the iPhone had a 5.3% marketshare with 1.7 million units sold. One year later, the iPhone had a 10.8% marketshare with 3.9 million units sold. Overall, worldwide smartphone sales increased from 32.3 million units sold in the 1Q of 2008 to 36.4 million unit sales in 1Q 2009.
