Largely due to the success of its exclusive iPhone deal with Apple, UK mobile operator O2 bucked the economic downturn and reported impressive financial results in its last fiscal quarter. Specifically, iPhone sales in Britain were up 10.4% this past quarter compared to the same quarter a year-ago. Overall, O2 has sold over 1 million iPhones since the device was first launched in November 2007, and there are no signs of a slowdown in sales coming anytime soon. Matthew Key, the chairman of Telefonica (O2’s parent company), noted that iPhone sales have remained surprisingly robust given surrounding economic conditions, and that sales continue to accelerate.
